Workplace Rights Ombudsman
Recreational diving industry report - 2007
The Queensland Workplace Rights Ombudsman undertook an investigation into the Recreational Dive Industry after receiving several complaints in relation to workplace fairness and issues relating to underpayment of wages and conditions of work. Industry stakeholders, employers and employees provided information directly to the Ombudsman.
The investigation revealed patron safety was paramount among employers and employees interviewed. Employment practices examined revealed that most operators interviewed were lacking in at least some aspect.
It was found to be common practice for employers to pay a sub-standard hourly rate of pay but then to use employee commissions towards reaching minimum legal hourly rates for dive staff. Almost all trainees were incorrectly paid.
The Ombudsman provided information and advice to employers, and has referred compliance matters on to the relevant authorities.
The report includes:
- Executive summary
- Allegations
- Ombudsman's functions and powers
- Objectives and consultation
